Zistopia AU #02. Turns out that escaped convict you chased down and humiliated in front of an apartment of mice the other day is your only lead in solving a mystery. Good fuckin luck.
'My biggest takeaway from looking back on these is how inconsistent the artwork was. I think stylistically it started to come together much later but these early drawings are a lot of trying things and seeing what sticks. Nick in particular was very grimy looking, which works for the bad cop/villain schtick at the start of the story' - nicolaswildes
The actual concept is solidified in these three panels.
Zistopia AU #03. They stopped for food.
'This sequence of dialogue is putting the odd couple on their first date, so to speak. I kind of cringe at the dialogue now but it wasn't being fully thought out- it was being written as it was drawn, in a sort of seat-of-the-pants first draft.' - nicolaswildes
'That's really what the whole thing was, but people still seem to resonate with first draft writing. Go figure.' - nicolaswildes
'This whole sequence I guess is very millennial writing. I don't know what people have against that.' - nicolaswildes

'The narrative jumps around quite a bit in the first 10 parts, exploring Judy's pressures at home and some of Nick's childhood.' - nicolaswildes
'Its a bit eclectic but the placement of these diversions get more intentional later in the story.' - nicolaswildes
'This early art bothers me because the rabbits are not very rabbity.' - nicolaswildes

Zistopia is 2016 era community-sourced fan comic based on a scrapped concept for Disney's Zootopia. The original first chapters and overall script/storyline was penned by tumblr user nicolaswildes, who later invited additional artists to help draw and flesh out later chapters.

Eventually updates came to halt and in 2018 nicolaswildes posted a final update with a linked pdf detailing the planned ending of the story. The project was considered abandoned.

In 2026 tumblr user thehyenatrio began commissioning artists on reddit to draw the unfinished chapters, bringing the story to completion.

Zistopia is set in a 1970s inspired version of the proto-Zootopia universe, which drew influence from 60s spy flicks. While some events of the story are lifted from concept art by Byron Howard, Zistopia branches off into its own narrative and subverts the pro-police/cop show undercurrents of the Zootopia franchise by presenting a sociologically centered story in which solutions to seemingly insurmountable challenges come from collective action rather than individualist aspirations.
